Finding the body and soul

After two workshops this spring, [ad hoc] is preparing to cast and generate a new play, built on the backbone of William Shakespeare’sOthelloand a certain interpretation of the text and philosophy of the time by Stanley Cavell, focusing on Othello’s internal dilemma as the engine that drives the tragedy of the play.

We’re connecting this philosophical problem of having a body that isn’t always “us” (when we’re treated for what we are instead of who) and having a soul that can’t always be “known.” Of making someone else be the thing that shows you who you really are. Of hating yourself, and trying to come to love, instead.

We’ve been construction workers catcalling, we’ve been hit on at bars, we’ve been proposing marriage or convincing our loved ones not to. We’ve shared about moments where we’ve seen souls, we’ve had moments where we’ve lost them. We’ve dropped our pants, and rubbed our asses on the floor. We’ve looked for mirrors. We’ve taken photographs and stolen souls.

Now we need to make a play.
